Explains the different types of e-cigarettes available and safety and regulations around e-cigarettes.

Sometimes known as vapes, e-cigarettes are an alternative tool to smoking. It is estimated that 3.2 million adults in Great Britain use vapes, so is important to familiarise yourself with products available in store and online.1

E-cigarettes are made of three components: a battery, heating element and e-cigarette liquid (e-liquid). The e-liquid typically contains nicotine, propylene glycol and a flavour. Unlike cigarettes, there is no burning. Instead, nicotine is heated to become a vapour, which is then inhaled. As a result, no tar or carbon monoxide is produced, and there is no tobacco present. E-cigarettes should not be sold to children under 18 years old.
